The Society of Psychiatric Advanced Practice Nurses, founded in 1972, was the first of its kind in the country - the first professional nursing body to certify clinical specialists in psychiatric nursing. Today, the Society includes all psychiatric advanced practice nurses - both psychiatric clinical specialists and psychiatric nurse practitioners. The Society continues to advance the standards of psychiatric mental-health nursing.
